Its probably only bandwidth that is holding us back from using online software even more.
Google has now got into it with Google Apps. It can be set up as a complete intranet, which is entirely hosted by them and is free for educational institutions. just go to http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/var_0.html and see what they offer.
Microsoft is also going the same way with some of their applications they have microsoft office live ( http://smallbusiness.officelive.com/ ) Most of the online offerings provide slightly reduced versions of current apps, but most people rarely use all the features in their applications.
