Posting for the IT Group

OK so far we have John, Martin, Sharon and Mary added to the blog, it doesn’t take long.

Sometimes it hard to think about what to say (although not hard for some).

How about some discussion on Portable Apps. I know John and Martin have been doing some work on them, maybe we could hear something about that.

  2. I have just started to look at using portable apps. I bought a scan U3 4GB USB on Monday. It comes with virus software, security software, synchronisation for documents and outlook, new program wizard which allows uploading programs with 1 click etc. I have upload firefox and open office. I am just staring so I would appreciate any advice. I think it is going to be more popular as youcan carry your programs as well as your data with you.

  3. We have just showed some of the year 9’s how to add an audio program as a portable app to their USB’s. We have shown two classes so far and their were very keen on the idea. It means we can get them working on the sound files for their video projects regardless of the computer they are using at the time.

  4. This looks like a great idea. Are we limited to the programs on the portable apps website? Would a 1G USB be too small to be adding these apps?
Is firefox an alternative to explorer or does it add features to your current explorer? What are the advantages?

  5. There are other programs around which you can google for and it changes all the time.

A 1Gb would work although I already have almost 300Mb of apps on my USB, if you then add documents etc it could get a bit tight.

Firefox is just different, some people prefer it. It would let you easliy change your proxy if there are problems here at school. It has a number of add ons that are not available for IE. Some of the Sharepoint material won’t work properly with Firefox.

  6. I find Firefox great to use at home when the school server is down. So far I have nt had any problems with it.

  7. I am thinking that the use of portable apps might be a way to allow selected students to access youtube and other sites that are usually blocked. We could have a set of cheap USB drives with the necessary software installed. These could be given to students to plug into the computer and access the sites. I know it would not take long for them to work out how to do themselves but do you think it worth a trial?
There a lot of use information on yuotube and similar sites.

  8. Having USBs available would be a good idea. Students are certainly familiar with using youtube and we are finding more and more material available for Science on those sites. I suppose there would be a problem with students leaving the USBs as they are. Is there a way of blocking anything else being added?

  9. The portable apps sound like a good idea and an interesting way to integrate it into our system would by making USB’s available. I agree that they are worth a trial.

  10. Making USB’s available with programs on them sounds a good idea and definitely worth a trial.
